1st Skyway in Downtown Minneapolis

Hello, I have worked in downtown Minneapolis since 1969. My story is about the first skyway that the City installed across Marquette Avenue between 6th and 5th Streets. Located on that site is my favorite building in all of the Twin Cities! It is a little building, with a pink terracotta façade with Egyptian motif. Wonderful architectural artwork. On the inside of this tiny building you can find stars and moons on the black tiled floor and an Art Deco statute of a male nude with wings and a winding staircase, very mysterious. Just fantastic, it takes your breath away when you enter the shiny revolving doors. Well the day they took the jack hammer to the front of that building for the first skyway, I cried all day. Oh, no, not that building, too. Did they not see the beauty? The art deco design? Then the skyway cam and I took my first walk through it and up close I could gaze at the Egyptian façade and thought……….progress? Okay. Sure was nice to stand in the warm skyway and admire my favorite building. Then, two years ago they decided a parking ramp should be located there. My favorite building was under construction again, this time they took down the whole front façade and put it back up, including the Art Deco statue inside. I may not have all the facts about my favorite building in Minneapolis, but I am pretty sure it was the first skyway and have to thank my lucky stars that the building was not torn down. I still walk the skyway and gaze at the motif, wow, they knew how to build things in those days???
