Takashi treats Yamamoto Hedeo's manga, on which the film is based, with almost exaggerated respect and fidelity. Ichi, a self-pitying nerd bullied since childhood, is hypnotized and becomes the underworld's cruelest killer. He shows no remorse for his gruesome acts of sexual humiliation, torture, and outright mutilation. When he kills a Yakuza boss, the hunt for him is on. A graphic existentialist story about pain, Ichi the Killer is a spiraling violent ride into nihilism. Takashi's film is a treatise on the cyclical nature of violence, the pointlessness (and subsequent anarchic devastation) of vengeance, the inevitability and consequences of human egoism, and the complete lack of morality and ethics in a completely deterministic world. 2001, Japan, color, 35mm, in Japanese with English subtitles, 128 minutes.
