The fish that did not want to be caught
One nice sunny day while out ice fishing on the big Missouri River at Mobridge, S.D., I watch a young boy playing on the ice not far from where I was fishing. He had his dad and his dad's friend fishing. They had a fish shack but also had lines outside. Now that the stage is set. As I was tending to my lines hoping to get a strike I noticed some excitement. The boy's dad had just pulled in a nice 8 lb. walleye. The man was very excited, as any fishermen would be. The fish seemed to have gotten tangled up in the lines so the man went to the fish shack to get a knife to cut the string. Meanwhile his friend had left the shack to tend to his line and found he had a fish on. Pulled on the pole and reeled it in with excitement. As I look to see the first walleye slip back down the hole, but then come up the other hole, I thought to myself, this is going to get interesting. Once they figured who really caught the fish, which was the second man, they unhooked it and put it in the fish shack. Here's where the boy comes into the picture. As we all know, boys at about 10 like to play with fish when they're caught, and when fish are in a warm fish shack for a short time they get lively. Well that fish thought, this is my chance to get out of here. Flip out of the young man's hands and down the hole he went. Needless to say, the man who caught the fish was not a happy fisherman after that. But you can bet the fish who got away was. Probably said, WOW that was close!! Making memories!!
