Takashi Miike began his career as assistant director to the eminent Japanese director Imamura Shohei, but quickly made the camera his own and became Japan's most prolific cult director and the king of cinematic punk. He has crafted intense, nerve-shattering thrillers and taboo-trashing comedies, and his films can be considered as progressive as they are transgressive. Jumping genres from musicals to Yakuza (Japanese mafia) films to karate movies, young adult dramas, and nail-biting gore fests, Takashi has worked in numerous styles. His films commonly veer from scatological frenzy to mock-sober solemnity as if they were written and shot by accident. Creating five to six films a year, he is one of a rare breed: a fully independent director with originality. Nothing is impossible in Takashi's kingdom of thrills, panic, disaster, and over-the-top shocks. Tony Rayns in Sight and Sound explained it best when he wrote, '[Takashi believes] what goes on below the belt is as interesting as what goes on in the back of the mind."
