Art School: When is performance radical?

This session of Art School, led by senior curator Fionn Meade and local artist Tia Gardner, illuminates themes from the exhibition Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art. This groundbreaking show is the first to survey more than 50 years of performance art by visual artists of African descent from the United States and the Caribbean. Featuring live performances as well as objects, it includes more than 100 works by 36 artists spanning three generations from the 1960s to the present.

Art School demystifies contemporary art by putting it into context—culturally, historically, and personally. Through short, succinct sessions, you’ll come to understand what the fuss is all about—and even feel like a connoisseur yourself.
