Can a piece of mail be considered art? Starting in the 1960s, many artists went in search of alternative techniques for creating and sharing their work. Hoping to bypass museums and galleries, some turned to the postal service and later the fax machine to send art inexpensively around the world. Taking the form of letters, postcards, and facsimiles, their artful correspondences challenged traditional modes of display. Through such projects, artists could communicate directly to audiences and the process of exchange became a primary aspect of the artworks.

The Walker’s archives include many examples of correspondence art, received through the years from all over the world. This presentation highlights pieces by three artists who used these unique distribution methods. Together, Ray Johnson’s whimsical collages, Eleanor Antin’s photographic postcards, and Stan VanDerBeek’s fax mural showcase ways that messages can become the medium for art.
