“Michael Gordon is at the forefront of his generation. His conflicting simultaneous rhythms create a powerful and highly energized music.”–Steve Reich
Celebrated post-minimalist composer Michael Gordon, best known as one of the three founders of New York’s Bang on A Can All-Stars and festival, visits the Twin Cities to debut his newest music. Gordon’s work “defeats categorization by genre,” writes the New York Times, combining “the fury of punk rock, the nervous brilliance of free jazz, and the intransigence of classical modernism.” The performance features several of his new compositions presented with alluring new films that visual/media artist Bill Morrison created specifically for this music. Gordon’s five-member band includes himself on keyboards, composer/instrumentalist Todd Reynolds (Ethel) on violin, Christian Bongers (bass), Bryce Dessner (guitar), and David Cossin (drums).
