In his increasingly rare composition classes, O’Connor discards the common practice of teaching based on musical forms, concentrating instead on ways to deepen a personal choreographic voice and read one’s individual creative impulses. Attention is focused on the development of an analytical eye for ideas fundamental to the work. In order to develop this “vocabulary,” a series of questions is posed based on the emotional range of the body, internal music, dramatic structure, history, culture, and the interrelatedness of elements in the work. The artist will further examine the need for objectivity in scrutinizing a work and bring clarity to its thematic center. All experience levels welcome; limited to 15 participants.
