Eiko & Koma: Naked

“There is no one like these two dancer-choreographers. Theirs is the intensity of strong, white light, exhausting but beautiful.” — Dance Magazine

Art forms merge and a gallery becomes a stage. Naked is a dance/visual art installation in which renowned Japanese movement artists Eiko & Koma inhabit the Walker’s Event Horizon exhibition. Created specifically for the space, this organic monthlong performance touches on universal themes relating to nature and the body. The artists explore a conceptual environment that will capture your senses, while their exposed bodies serve as a metaphor for raw human existence and the longing of the soul. Stay for a few minutes or the entire day, or return numerous times to see the piece evolve.

Walker Commission

  • Naked is a Walker Art Center commission and was developed in part during a creative residency at the Park Avenue Armory in New York during the summer and fall of 2010. The commission is made possible by the William and Nadine McGuire Commissioning Fund, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

As part of the Walker Art Center’s Expanding the Rules of Engagement with Artists and Audiences initiative, the Walker Art Center’s presentation is made possible by the Bush Foundation. Additional support is provided by the National Dance Project (a project of the New England Foundation for the Arts, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and additional funding from the Ford Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Community Connections Fund of the MetLife Foundation) and is supported by the Japan Foundation through the Performing Arts JAPAN program.

Event Horizon is made possible by major support from Judy Dayton and Elizabeth Redleaf. Additional generous support is provided by Joan and John Nolan, Frances and Frank Wilkinson, and Miriam and Erwin Kelen. Media partner Mpls.St.Paul Magazine.
