Kenna Cottman
Shared Language
Kenna Cottman (aka Kenna Sarge) is widely known for her West African and hip-hop fusion techniques. With Shared Language, she considers conflict in her own cultural identity, collaborating with Senegalese griot (storyteller/musician) Backa Niang to combine oral language traditions with a new movement vocabulary derived from Senegalese sabar dance, Guinée djembe dance, and a more contemporary take on her own style.
Mad King Thomas
All Sparkles, No Heart
Known for their sense of humor and delight in irreverence, Mad King Thomas (Tara King, Theresa Madaus, and Monica Thomas) present a new piece that examines the complicated nature of agency and power in a culture of spectacle. Drawing inspiration from a love of bicycles, sparkles, and women, the work is influenced by the past 100 years of culture, including suffragettes, Guy Debord, the Las Vegas Folies Bergère, and a long line of glamorous blond celebrities. Note: Performance contains hints of T&A.
