William Kentridge/Handspring Puppet Company

“Rare and singular stage treat. Every once in a while the universe conspires to bring together an astonishing collection of talents who produce a thing of enduring magic and wonder… Woyzeck on the Highveld, is such a creation.” —Cape Times (South Africa)

Artist/filmmaker William Kentridge directs this adaptation of Georg Buchner’s famous play about jealousy, murder, and the ultimate destruction of an individual by an uncaring society. The original title character was a 19th-century German soldier, but in this version he’s a migrant worker in 1956 Johannesburg. Bringing together rod-manipulated puppets, live actors, and Kentridge’s own animated film, this rare remount was the first collaboration between Kentridge and Capetown-based Handspring Puppet Company, known internationally for its extraordinary experiments and innovations in the art of puppetry.
