Al Otro Lado (To the Other Side) with All Water Has a Perfect Memory

From Sinaloa, Mexico, to Los Angeles, California, Al Otro Lado (To the Other Side) (2005, video, 70 minutes) chronicles the story of an aspiring composer of corridos—popular folk ballads—as he navigates the worlds of drug smuggling and illegal immigration.

Borrowing its title from a Toni Morrison quote, the experimental documentary All Water Has a Perfect Memory (2001, video, 19 minutes) incorporates Super-8 footage of Almada’s relatives and their narration, exploring the reverberations of a family tragedy and collective memory.

The director will be present at the Walker Cinema to introduce her film and take questions from the audience.
