Filmmakers in Conversation: Natalia Almada
A dual citizen of Mexico and the United States, Natalia Almada transcends the mythical border between these nations and their cultures in her documentary films, dwelling on their inherent dualities, nuances, and gray areas. Her work is infused with socioeconomic issues as well as an abiding sense of poetry and lyricism. Almada’s films have screened at the Sundance Film Festival; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Guggenheim Museum; and the Whitney Biennial.
Almada first visited the Walker in 2010 for the area premiere of El General, for which she received a Sundance Documentary Directing Award. She returns to the Walker Cinema with her newest film, El Velador (The Night Watchman), which premiered at New Directors/New Films and the Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. The director will be present at the Walker to introduce her films and take questions from the audience.
