Free First Saturday: Grassroots

Our creative, social, and family networks shape who we are and the places we live. This daylong extravaganza features dance performances and collaborative crafting–including a giant crocheted rug–as part of a festival of locally grown talent.

Gallery admission is free for everyone on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am to 5 pm, with a variety of family activities scheduled from 10 am to 3 pm.

Schedule of Events

Art Activity: Botanical Mash-ups, 10 am–3 pm

Create an alien plant by combining materials found in your backyard—pinecones and needles, maple and ash seeds, and more. Led by artist Jim Proctor, this activity transforms plant material into bizarre and fantastical creations.

• Whittling: Learn how to transform a piece of wood into a spoon or butter knife. Local whittlers will be on hand to teach the basics of wood carving.

• Natural Dying: Catch a demonstration of fiber dyeing with flowers, plants, and food scraps, led by Kristi Fackel.

Performance: MTM@10, 11 am and 2 pm

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

Now in its 10th edition, the Momentum: New Dance Works series introduces the next generation’s most promising choreographers and offers a snapshot of Minnesota’s contemporary dance landscape. In celebration of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden’s 25th anniversary, three Momentum alumni perform dances newly commissioned by the Walker as part of the Free First Saturday festivities. Program notes are available online.
