Noah Baumbach: Visibly Human

Over 18 years, Noah Baumbach has become known for films that are at once compellingly watchable and distinctly—sometimes excruciatingly—uncomfortable. Drawing from awkward, often painful personal experiences, including his upbringing in Brooklyn and his college/post-collegiate years, he creates characters infused with a peculiar combination of cruelty and tenderness, many on the cusp of some life change or otherwise mired in inertia. The retrospective program includes the premiere of Baumbach’s newest feature, Frances Ha, as well as a dialogue with the filmmaker in the Walker Cinema.

On April 5, Baumbach joins Scott Foundas, chief film critic at Variety, for a discussion of his creative process, his work as both screenwriter and director, and the films he’s made over the past 18 years.
