“A fiercely energetic debut … with a punky, female energy.” —Hollywood Reporter
Set in Tangier, Traitors follows Malika—a conservatively dressed student and call-center worker by day, and the leader of an all-girl punk band by night. Attempting to make enough money to cut her band’s first demo, she meets gangster Samir, who offers her a large sum, if she helps smuggle hashish from Morocco’s Rif Mountains. Variety praised the film for its depiction of an Arabic woman with ambitions, and its “lively depiction of Tangiers’ subcultures.” A selection of the 2013 Venice Film Festival. 2013, Morocco/ US, in Arabic and French with English subtitles, 83 minutes.
Director Sean Gullette will introduce the screening and a Q&A follows.
