Celebrate the Walker’s 75 years as a public art center with time-traveling performances, artful cupcakes, photo portraits, activities galore, and a real hot air balloon! Guest programmer Alyssa Baguss creates a special day with projects that will surprise and delight the entire family.
Explore a range of activities and art-making on Free First Saturday! Enjoy free gallery admission and family fun for all on the first Saturday of each month. Activities designed for kids ages 6 to 12 are offered from 10 am to 3 pm.
Performance: The Time Wanderers, 11 am and 1 pm
Step into the Wandering Acceleration Contraption, aka the Walker Cinema, to go on a time travel adventure. Join time traveler Ralph Static and his good friend Pete as they journey through the Walker’s history with music, dance, jokes, audience interaction, and lots of silliness. Written and performed by Levi Weinhagen. 45 minutes.
Activity: Sweet Celebration, 12 noon
Enjoy a free cupcake in celebration of the Walker’s 75th year as a public art center. Ellsworth Kelly–inspired cupcakes made by chef Kristi Varner of Gigi’s Café will be handed out at 12 noon, while supplies last.

Step into a room transformed by a real hot air balloon.

What would the Walker Art Center look like in 20 years? Be inspired by works in the collection to create a model of your futuristic museum.
Art Activity: Pop-Up Cards, 10 am–3 pm
Make a birthday card as a keepsake for the Walker’s 75th-anniversary celebration.
Activity: Walker Portrait Studio, 11 am–3 pm
Put a spin on traditional portraiture with photographer Sam Hoolihan. Become a character from the past with costumes and accessories provided. Photos will be presented on a large screen during Free First Saturday and online after the event on the Walker’s Flickr page.
