Chantal Akerman, 1950–2015
Chantal Akerman was a Belgian-born, Paris-based filmmaker whose intelligent, exact, and demanding films all bear her trademark searing tenderness toward her subjects. Her camera deliberately captured every nuanced detail, finding meaning in each frame, and her unique form changed the history of filmmaking. Her iconic D’Est (From the East) was installed as part of the Walker’s reopening in 1995 in an extraordinary three-room exhibition that brought the viewer along on her journey through Europe.
In homage to the late filmmaker, the Walker premieres her final film, No Home Movie, with additional screenings of the new documentary on her life and a rarely screened 16mm print of D’Est from the Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection.
Celebrate Akerman citywide: Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles will be screened at the Trylon microcinema April 15–17.
