Learn more about the theme of utopia in the context of the exhibition Adiós Utopia: Dreams and Deceptions in Cuban Art Since 1950 with exhibition curators Gerardo Mosquera, Elsa Vega, and René Francisco Rodríguez. Two afternoon talks feature several generations of artists from Cuba who offer a look into the artistic production of the island nation. Speakers include Yoan Capote, Yaima Carrazana, José Figueroa, René Francisco, Glenda León, Reynier Leyva Novo, Wilfredo Prieto, Sandra Ramos, and others. Panelists will be primarily speaking in Spanish. Headsets for simultaneous translation into English will be provided as needed.

About the Curators
René Francisco Rodríguez is an artist and professor at the Instituto Superior de Arte, Havana. He has been a colleague of and mentor to some of the most notable members of the current generation of artists active in Cuba and abroad. His work has been included in several international biennials, including Havana, São Paulo, and Venice. In 2010, he was awarded Cuba’s National Fine Arts Prize
Gerardo Mosquera is an independent art critic, curator, and writer based in Havana. He cofounded the Havana Biennial and has been a curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; artistic director of Photo Spain in Madrid (2011, 2012, and 2013); and chief curator of the 4th San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial (2015). He has also served as an advisor to the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam; Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; and other international art centers.
Elsa Vega is an art historian based in Havana and a scholar of modern Cuban art with a focus on art of the 1950s–1970s. For more than 20 years, she was a curator at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, where she organized many exhibitions from its collections as well as projects in Brazil, Canada, Holland, and Spain. She has published widely in catalogues, periodicals, and journals. Vega has twice been awarded the Annual Prize for Cultural Research (2001 and 2002) and is a member of the Cuban National Heritage Commission.
