Merce Cunningham Across Media

Join us for four days of events that explore the range of Merce Cunningham’s legacy across the arts. Sessions include a dialogue with former Merce Cunningham Dance Company dancers, a lecture-demonstration with composers, a screening and discussion of avant-garde films, and a focused look at Cunningham’s collaborations with three visual artists. Programs are free and open to the public.

Renowned as both choreographer and dancer, Cunningham (1919–2009) revolutionized dance through his partnerships with dozens of artists who created costumes, lighting, films, music, and décor for his choreographic works. Common Time, the first major survey of Cunningham’s prolific 70-year career, focuses on these dynamic artistic collaborations, which grew out of his radical notion that the components of a dance—movement, sound, and visual art—could be created independently, coming together only during the “common time” of a performance.
