Free First Saturday: Portrait Party

Have you ever created a picture of yourself, a pet, or a friend? This month learn about portraits by Alice Neel and Kehinde Wiley in the exhibition Five Ways In, then meet local artist Leslie Barlow who will teach you the tricks of the trade.

Free First Saturdays feature free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month, plus performances, games, art-making, and kids’ films from 10 am to 3 pm. Family friendly food options are available or bring something from home to snack on in the museum’s public spaces.

Artist Spotlight: Glenn Ligon
Coloring Activity, 10 am–3 pm
Curator Talk for Families, 12:30 pm

In 1999, the internationally renowned Glenn Ligon had a year-long residency at the Walker, during which he hosted a series of coloring sessions with daycare-aged kids in Minneapolis. These sessions inspired a series of paintings called Coloring. Today, you can color your own pages, visit the display Source Material about Ligon’s project, and join an in-gallery talk for families led by Interpretation Fellow Alexandra Nicome.

Short Film: Mrs. McCutcheon
10 am–3 pm

Now at his third school, 10-year-old Tom has always felt he was born in the wrong body. After taking up the name Mrs. McCutcheon in place of his birth name, he has trouble finding acceptance from his newfound peers—but a school dance is about to revolutionize it all. Directed by John Sheedy. 2017, Australia, 10 mins. Showing on loop in the Bentson Mediatheque.

Art-Making Activity: Picture Hunt
10 am–3 pm

You’re on a mission to recreate a portrait from Five Ways In in this collaborative project. Teaching artist Galen Fletcher will send you into the galleries with a goal: take a picture of an ear, a nose, a hand, any part you like. Then come back, print out your photograph, and add it to the giant, visitor-created collage.

Art-Making Activity: Portrait Party
10 am–3 pm

Artist and educator Leslie Barlow knows a thing or two about portraiture—and she’s here to show you her best techniques. Join us for a portrait party!
