The Walker Art Center is taking every precaution for the safety and care of all visitors, staff, and artists. To proactively protect the entire community, the museum will remain temporarily closed. This program has been affected by the closure. We hope to resume our activities and welcome you back soon. Learn more.

Filmmakers aren’t the only time-based media artists to shape landscapes. This program highlights sound artists and composers who use landscape as a starting point for their compositions. Malena Szlam will screen her 35mm film Altiplano, featuring the sounds and images from the South America’s Andes Mountains. After the film, the lights will remain low so we can hear the works of soundscapes in a cinema with a dark screen. Then, the lights come up for two performances by the local collective 113, based in St. Paul.

Altiplano
Directed by Malena Szlam
Filmed in the Andes Mountains in the traditional lands of the Atacameño, Aymara, and Calchaquí-Diaguita in Northern Chile and Northwest Argentina, Altiplano takes place within a geological universe of ancestral salt flats, volcanic deserts, and colored lakes. Fusing earth with sky, day with night, heartbeat with mountain, and mineral with iridescent cloud, the film reveals a vibrating landscape in which a bright blue sun forever threatens to eclipse a blood-red moon. 2018, 35mm, 16 min.
