Under witness protection at a convent, lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg) does what she does best—livens up the room through song. Faced with a list of hymnals for the nun’s choir, Deloris introduces songs such as the 1964 Mary Wells hit single “My Guy,” which, for the purposes of their performance, is transformed into “My God,” a tongue-in-cheek nod to the vibrant entangled histories of Black music and spiritual music. 1992, USA, DCP, 96 min.
