Did you know that one can make films without the use of a camera? In this workshop, visiting filmmaker Rhayne Vermette will repurpose old 16mm films and incorporate scratching, drawing, and other manipulative collage-like methods to create new works, often called “found footage” films created with direct animation techniques. Individual film-strip segments created by participants will then be spliced together, or joined, to create a short camera-less movie that will be projected on 16mm at the workshop’s conclusion.

Activity instructions, available in English and Spanish, are designed for ages 4 and up. Materials are provided and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis; supplies are limited. No prior registration is required for Art Club—the more you visit, the more you’ll discover.

This workshop is presented in conjunction with the exhibition This Must Be the Place: Inside the Walker’s Collection, where Vermette’s film Extraits d’une Famille (Excerpts of a Family) is on view. View more of her films recently acquired in the Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection with the artist present in the Walker Cinema the following day, Friday, November 22, at 7 pm, during the program Our Winnipeg, Our Selves.

Stop in on Thursday nights for Open Stacks and explore books, journals, and artist files with help from expert librarians. Discover a new book, research your favorite artist, or just peruse the vast collection. The Walker’s library is open from 5 to 8 pm (no appointment necessary). The library is located directly behind the Art Lab. The Mediatheque is always free, streaming select films and movies from the Ruben-Bentson collection. Choose your own adventure with our interactive menu, or sit back and enjoy a curated playlist of films.
