Museums are normally strict about keeping the art on the walls, but that’s not entirely the case this winter at the Walker!

In conjunction with the exhibition Tetsuya Yamada: Listening, the artist will reprise his Cup Exchange project for one evening. Participants should bring the most ordinary ceramic cup they can find to exchange with one of Yamada’s originals. The traded cups will then become part of the exhibition.

Starting at 5 pm, enjoy art-making in the Cargill Lounge, hosted by the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council.

The Cup Exchange will begin at 6 pm. Visitors are invited to form a line in the Cargill Lounge from 5:45 pm. The event will end when all of Yamada’s cups have been exchanged.

No prior registration required, but Yamada’s cups are limited. Exchanged cups should not exceed 4 inches in diameter, due to space constraints in the gallery. Open to all ages.

Tetsuya Yamada (Japan, b. 1968) is a Twin Cities–based artist whose interdisciplinary practice blurs the lines between art, design, and craft. Yamada has been twice awarded the McKnight Artist Fellowship for Visual Artists and the McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Ceramic Artists. He has participated in artist residencies at the European Ceramic Work Center (EKWC) in the Netherlands and the Fabric Workshop and Museum. His work has been exhibited at Francis Naumann Fine Art, Franklin Art Works (MN), and the Clay Studio (PA), and is in the collections of the Mint Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, the Fabric Workshop and Museum, and the Walker Art Center. The Walker-organized exhibition Tetsuya Yamada: Listening is the first US museum presentation of the artist’s work.

Audience participation requested/required.
