On Creating Photography Books

Books are a unique format for photographers to gather and present their work. Unlike the walls of a gallery, photography books allow individuals worldwide to bring bodies of art into their homes to experience and reflect on for years to come.

Exploring this aspect of the photographer’s practice, this panel discussion gathers Twin Cities photographers to discuss their approaches to making award-winning and impactful books.

This evening explores how photography books reflect diverse artistic practices, from Katherine Turczan’s exploration of her family’s ties to Ukraine, to Shannon Taggart’s documentation of the world’s largest spiritualist community, as well as Wordsworth M. Musinguzi’s mapping of the lived experiences of queer and trans immigrants of color making homes in the Twin Cities. The panel will be moderated by Alec Soth.

Following the talk, join us for a free book signing.

Wordsworth M. Musinguzi (he/him) is an image-maker, visual artist, author, archivist, and educator based in Minneapolis, MN. Using and mixing both traditional and new approaches to image-making, storytelling, curating, and publishing, he aims to reframe dominant narratives about the contemporary American experience and identity through the intergenerational lens of underground nightlife and DIY culture, community organizing, and other subculture and social movements — IRL/URL — across borders.

Since 2014, Word has installed 15+ solo and group exhibitions and guest-curated gallery shows in collaboration with early-career and emerging artists, social justice organizations, public universities, high schools, and youth-led collectives. He has published 11 photography books and zines, including their most recent work, A Matter of Time, released in October 2022.

Alec Soth (b. 1969) is a photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has published over twenty-five books including Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), NIAGARA (2006), Broken Manual (2010), Songbook (2015), I Know How Furiously Your Heart is Beating (2019), and A Pound of Pictures (2022). Soth has had over fifty solo exhibitions including survey shows organized by Jeu de Paume in Paris (2008), the Walker Art Center in Minnesota (2010) and Media Space in London (2015). Soth has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2013). In 2008, Soth created Little Brown Mushroom, a multi-media enterprise focused on visual storytelling. Soth is represented by Sean Kelly in New York, Weinstein Hammons Gallery in Minneapolis, Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, Loock Galerie in Berlin, and is a member of Magnum Photos.

Shannon Taggart’s photographs have been exhibited internationally and featured in publications such as CNN, New York Times T Style Magazine, Financial Times, Le Monde and the Paris Review. Her first book, Séance, was named one of TIME Magazine’s ‘Best Photobooks of 2019.’ She is currently working on an illustrated book about the Society for Research on Rapport and Telekinesis (SORRAT), one of the strangest cases in the history of parapsychology. Shannon lives in St. Paul, MN.

Katherine Turczan is a Professor of Media Arts at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She holds an MFA from Yale University and a BFA from The Cooper Union. Turczan’s photographic work with her 8″ x10″ large-format camera explores family history and monuments in post-communist Ukraine. Her portrait projects From Where They Came, Promise of Recovery, and Brezhnev’s Daughters investigate the human face of a country that has been undergoing historic political upheaval, most recently in the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022. Turczan has been awarded numerous grants throughout her career, including a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, a Fulbright fellowship, a McKnight Foundation grant, a Jerome Foundation grant, and a Bush Foundation grant. Her work has been exhibited and collected in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Institute of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and many others. Turczan’s first monograph, From Where They Came, was published in Spring 2023 by Stanley/Barker, UK. In 2024, The Tweed Museum in Minnesota and a Gallery Exhibition for Galerie C in Paris, France, and Neuchatel, Switzerland, will show her work.
