In connection to the Minnesota premiere of the film Bitterroot, join us for a Story Cloth Collage workshop hosted by local artist Tshab Her.

Hmong story cloths emerged in the 1970s in order to generate revenue for poor Hmong families in the refugee camps of Thailand after fleeing persecution during and after the “secret war” in Laos. These story cloths depict a variety of images concerning Hmong daily life, migration, family relations, and mythical legends. In celebration of this powerful storytelling tradition, create your very own story cloth using paper collage techniques with precut shapes to illustrate your own personal stories and experiences.

Materials are provided and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis; supplies are limited. Activity instructions, available in English, Spanish, and Hmong, are designed for all ages. No prior registration is required for Art Club. The more you visit, the more you’ll discover.

Gallery admission is free on Thursday nights, 5–9 pm. Save time and reserve your gallery admission tickets online. Please note: Individual events during Free Thursday Nights are first-come, first-served.

Bio

Tshab Her is an interdisciplinary artist who focuses on embroidery and textile. She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago as a second generation Hmong American raised by her refugee parents who fled the “secret war” in Laos. She uses paaj ntaub, a traditional Hmong textile art, as a tool for storytelling by confronting the tensions between Hmong statelessness, imperial hegemony, displacement, belonging, femininity, joy, and cultural autonomy. The vibrancy and flow of her work calls attention to the resilience and strength of the war-torn Hmong body in search for collective peace. She received a Bachelor of Fine Art in studio arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2016 and moved to the Twin Cities in 2021, where she now lives and works. As an extension of her art practice, she creates handmade statement earrings under the guise of It’s Pronounced Cha.
