Free First Saturday: Express Yourself!

Come collaborate with teaching artists to design that perfect outfit—because this time, you get to wear your art! Make wearable art and explore the galleries in your new finery this Free First Saturday at the Walker.

Free First Saturday features free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month. Gallery admission tickets are available online in advance and on-site on the event day from the Main Lobby desk. Free admission 10 am–5 pm; activities 10 am–3 pm.

Express Yourself with Creative Characters, 10 am–3 pm
Make your own personal character with teaching artist Broderick Poole. Create mini outfits to show off your personality and interests, and get inspired by fabric materials.

Power Pearls Art-Making Activity, 10 am–3 pm
You know you’re great. You shouldn’t have to say it out loud. Spell it out for us on a bracelet or necklace with handwritten letter beads.

Your Biggest FAN Art-Making Activity, 10 am–3 pm
Be your own biggest fan! In this activity, create a fan that celebrates YOU. Your design can be inspired by what makes you amazing.

Guided Tours of the Walker Galleries
Join a Walker educator for a family friendly guided tour of artworks on view in the galleries at 11:30 am (40 min.), take a guided tour for general audiences at 1 pm (60 min.), or join guided tour in Spanish at 3 pm (60 min.). Tours explore a selection of artworks across current exhibitions and include interactive discussion. Meet at the Main Lobby desk five minutes before the tour starts.

Visit the Walker Art Center Library, 10 am–3 pm
The Walker’s library is open! Explore the stacks and find inspiration in the library’s collection of artful books. The library entrance is through the Art Lab.

The short film will be captioned in English.

Sensory notes: The exhibition This Must Be the Place: Inside the Walker’s Collection includes two video rooms with reduced light levels. Some videos include flashing, flickering, or disorienting visual effects and sound that changes in volume, pitch, and tone.

Broderick Poole is a Twin Cities–based visual artist from St. Paul’s historic Rondo neighborhood. For more than 25 years, he’s created acrylic paintings, handcrafted patchwork apparel, and custom designs for clients ranging from community members to professional athletes and award-winning artists. As the founder of Vintage Pooleboy Art & HeArt of the Cities Apparel, he blends fine art with fashion, drawing inspiration from Minnesota landmarks, Rondo history, and Black culture.
