Free First Saturday: Kids’ Film Fair 2025

The Walker’s Kids’ Film Fair returns this March! Join us for a selection of inspiring, family-friendly short films. Visitors to the Walker will enjoy relaxed screenings in the Walker Cinema and the Bentson Mediatheque, plus film-inspired art activities throughout the museum. Or you can stream the selection from the comfort of home all weekend long. Let the movie magic begin!

Free First Saturday features free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month. Gallery admission tickets are available online in advance and on-site on the event day from the Main Lobby desk. Seating in the Cinema is limited. Free admission 10 am–5 pm; activities 10 am–3 pm.

In-person screenings of the animated shorts program are available on March 1 in the Walker Cinema. Screenings will begin at 10:30 and 11:30 am, 1:30 and 2:30 pm.

The live-action shorts program will screen on loop in the Bentson Mediatheque throughout the day, 10 am–3 pm.

These are relaxed screenings. Adults are welcome to read subtitles to children and leave early, if preferred.

Art-Making Activity: Wonder Turners, 10 am–3 pm
In celebration of cinema, we are making “wonder turners.” This toy creates an optical illusion through drawings and movement. The results are like a short animation in your hands.

Art-Making Activity: Green Screen Magic, 10 am–3 pm
Join us for an immersive experience where you will place yourself in a scene from your favorite film from the Kids’ Film Fair! This activity is where green screen, technology, and art all come together.

Interactive Activity: Telling Stories through Play, 10 am–3 pm
Participate in tales of family and community through play as you join a life-size board game. You become the playing pieces in a jumbo game board inspired by the Kids’ Film Fair 2025. Special thanks to MIGIZI’s Teklu Diye-konelin for bringing this activity to life!

Tour for Families, 11:30 am
Tour for General Audiences, 1 pm

Join a Walker educator for a guided family tour of artworks on view in the galleries at 11:30 am (40 min.), take a guided tour for general audiences at 1 pm (60 min.), or a tour for general audiences in Spanish at 3 pm (60 min.). Tours explore a selection of works across current exhibitions and include interactive discussion. Meet at the Main Lobby desk five minutes before the tour starts.

All films will be captioned in English. Film screenings in the Walker Cinema and Bentson Mediatheque include open captions and English subtitles for films with dialogue. Assistive listening devices are available in the Walker Cinema.

Binesikwe Means was born and raised in South Minneapolis, and is an enrolled citizen of the Oglala Lakota Tribe in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and a descendant of the White Earth Nation. Her name Binesikwe (Bi-Nay-See-Kway) is from the Ojibwe language, meaning “Thunderbird Woman.” She has a deep love of storytelling, as she describes, “because it is who we are as Indigenous peoples. It’s how we passed on our traditions and languages for generations,” and is passionate about creating the next generation of storytellers. She has worked for MIGIZI for 8 years as Lead Media Instructor for First Person Productions, a youth-led social enterprise that produces videos, design work, and social media campaigns for small businesses and nonprofits.

Teklu Diye-Konelin was born and raised in Anchorage for the Crow / Frog Clan of the Tahltan Nation. He is of Tahltan, Deg Xit’an, Polish, and Irish descent. In 2022 he graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, earning a BFA with a focus on creative writing and the performing arts. He has worked variously as a peer mentor, teaching artist, community and event organizer, poet, rapper, actor, interdisciplinary writer, multimedia artist, and Indigenous rights activist.
