Drawing from her work in activism, science fiction scholarship, and doula work, New York Times–bestselling author adrienne maree brown’s work ponders the semi-hypothetical question: How do we survive the end of the world as we know it? Less apocalyptic than that may suggest, brown’s books Emergent Strategy, Pleasure Activism, and Loving Corrections propose ways radical transformation can manifest in everyday life, often pulling inspiration from her long-standing investment in the science fiction parables of writer Octavia E. Butler.

For a Summer Series in the Walker Cinema, brown looks through and beyond dystopia to narratives that imagine compelling scenarios for what human life could look like if we find a way to persist on Earth. Drawing from near-future speculation, time travel, and space exploration to fantasy worlds filled with magical creatures, brown’s series centers ideas of dreams, love, environmental stewardship, and collective survival.
