Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, b. 1984, Ferndale, WA) lives and works in Brooklyn and is an assistant professor in the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. His work has been shown at festivals including Sundance, Park City and Salt Lake City, UT; Toronto International Film Festival; and New York Film Festival. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions and installations at the Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester, NY (2022); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2021); Hessel Museum of Art, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY (2020); and Saint Louis Art Museum (2020), among others. He has participated in group exhibitions, including the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, Sweden (2023); 14th Gwangju Biennial, South Korea (2023); Prospect.5, New Orleans (2021); 2018 FRONT Triennial, Cleveland; and 2017 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum; Guggenheim Museum and Museum of Modern Art, both New York; Marielouise Hessel Collection, Hessel Museum of Art, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; Minneapolis Institute of Art; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. In 2022 he was named a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and has also held a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacDowell Residency, among other major honors. He holds a BA from Portland State University, OR, and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
