1-1/8 x 8-1/2 x 6-1/4 inches
Note: title of the work on top of box lid and along edge of box lid is: Naturerfahrung in Afrika—not Naturerfahrungen in Afrika. Photographs are by Charles Wilp of Beuys' 1974 visit to Africa. The photographs are rather typical 4 x 6" or 6 x 4" "vacation" photos, and are mounted on pieces of black cardboard that are 5-7/8 x 8-1/4", so that each "sheet" just fits inside the box. [Are all of these shots from the coast of Kenya? One of the photos is of Beuys and a companion (Wilp?). Some photos are not beach scenes, e.g. two are of Beuys and a windmill.] Box bottom (accession #92.266.16) has a hole in the bottom, approx. 1" diameter. Both the 1985 Schellmann catalogue raisonné and the 1992 Schellmann catalogue raisonné indicate there are 16 photographs. The Walker's version is missing two of the color photos as there are only 14 in the box.
