Description
The painting is a reworking of several Vermeer paintings, including The Letter 1696, in the Rijksmuseum. The text in Attie's painting (over the letter-reader's head) reads, "When his estranged teacher Carel Fabritius died unexpectedly and under unusual circumstances, the news, much delayed, reached Vermeer's wife by letter."
