For more than 20 years, the Walker Art Center has been a leader in innovative youth programming, providing cultural institutions around the world with a successful model for engaging teens and young adults. At the center of this model is the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC), a diverse group of 13 young artists and art enthusiasts who ensure that events for teens are part of the Walker’s overall program throughout the year. Our teen programs bring a special vitality to the Walker, and these experiences have helped alumni attain scholarships and audiences for their work, secure curatorial and educational positions, and use their organizational and arts advocacy skills in their colleges and home communities.
We are currently seeking a Youth Programs Coordinator to be responsible for a variety of youth engagement programs here at the Walker Art Center. This individual will explore the many ways teens can connect with this dynamic institution including personal tours, invitations to opening events, film screenings, lectures, and performances, as well as finding other ways to collaborate across Walker projects.
- Work closely with the Assistant Director of Community-based Practices to plan and facilitate WACTAC including recruiting students, overseeing applications, develop syllabus, leading meetings, and implementing evaluation plans
- Provide complete project management for programs administered including partner relationship management, tracking stats, program scoping, production, evaluation and marketing.
- Organize and manage 2–3 Teen Arts Workshops per academic year; coordinate two teen-driven, museum-wide takeovers per school year
- Research and contract contemporary artists to develop workshops and lead discussions
- Oversee grant schedules, writing reports and applications for funding; maintain budget for teen programs and WACTAC; code appropriate expenses and maintain updated budget records and files; coordinate supplies and materials purchasing related to programs and workshops.
- Develop and oversee communication and marketing strategies for connecting with youth across the Twin Cities; coordinate with local schools and community organizations for youth recruitment
Schedule and Compensation
- Full-time (35 hours) with flexibility to work evenings and weekends required;
- Salary in the low to mid-30’s, dependent on level of experience; Excellent benefits package, Walker membership and museum discount, and the opportunity to work alongside talented individuals and support remarkable artists, events and programming.
- Minimum 1 year experience leading, developing, and evaluating arts programs with youth
- Strong track record of applied project management and program administration
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to work in a fast-paced museum environment
