Sharon Lockhart is known for making formally rigorous films and still photographs in staged settings. Represented in the Walker collection by a multimedia work, photos, and multiples, the artist recently took a moment to answer some of life’s most—and possibly least—pressing questions.

What’s the last (or favorite) book you read?

Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking.

What is one of the most unexpected influences on your art?

The inexpensive reproductions of paintings my mother collected and hung in our house when I was young.

What can be found in the trunk of your car?

A dirty blanket from carting large rocks, two large black umbrellas, and a jacket.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

To be more patient.

What was your most character-building experience?

Growing up with an aunt with Downs Syndrome, who happens to have the best sense of humor in the world.
