An Evening of Vibrational Energy with Hailu Mergia

To spark discussion, the Walker invites Twin Cities artists and critics to write reviews of our performances. The ongoing Re:View series shares a diverse array of independent voices and opinions; it doesn’t reflect the views or opinions of the Walker or its curators. Here, journalist Maya Clark shares her perspective on Saturday night’s performance by Hailu Mergia at The Cedar.

The Cedar Cultural Center was transformed into a jazzy Ethiopian nightclub when Hailu Mergia and Yonathon’s Cultural Show entered the room. I’ve been to countless live shows but nothing was quite like this evening. The environment was welcoming and intimate; I could tell I was in for a treat simply based on the energy that was draped over me as soon as I stepped in the venue.

Yonathon’s Cultural Show was everything I imagined it to be and more. The carefree and spontaneous nature of their set was infectious. Every song seemed almost improvised with how relaxed and natural each note would flow from the band. A nice surprise was the addition of trumpet player, Omar Abdulkarim, who brought a funky and sweet twist to what I’ve known a traditional band to be. I found myself, along with many others, swaying to every note as it rang out.

Performing songs from Mergia’s latest album, Lala Belu, the audience loved every bit of it. Hailu was such an animated performer, getting up from his keys every now and then to dance for us, encouraging us to do the same. A master of many instruments, we found him alternating between three different versions of a keyboard. With this memorable concert he’s shown us exactly why he’s recognized as a global music legend and he’s sure to be welcomed back into Minnesota with open arms and hearts.

I left the Cedar Cultural Center that evening feeling refreshed and revitalized. There are certain performers who have the ability to connect with each member of the audience and I’m happy to say that Hailu Mergia possesses that talent.
