Deborah Jowitt

Deborah Jowitt began to dance professionally in 1953, to show her choreography in 1962, and to write a regular dance column for The Village Voice in 1967. Jowitt was a founding member of Dance Theater Workshop and the Dance Critics Association. Her articles on dance have been published in a variety of newspapers and specialized journals. Jowitt’s books include the recent monograph Meredith Monk (1997), which she edited, and her third book, Time and the Dancing Image (1988), won the de la Torre Bueno Prize in 1989. She is a teacher and choreographer at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
