Jackie Amézquita

Jackie Amézquita is a Los Angeles–based artist/designer who was born and raised in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and migrated to the United States on 2003. She holds a BA in Fine Arts from Art Center College of Design and an associates degree in Visual Communications from Los Angeles Valley College. Amézquita is interested in the psycho-socio-political interactions of communities and how these influence and transform a socio-geographical system.

Art Opens Doors to More Intimate Understandings

“It’s not the same to look at the facade of a house as to be invited into it,” writes Jackie Amézquita. “The artist is the door that allows other people to interact with the interior of a different reality, dimension, or perspective.” Her own story, as an immigrant from Guatemala who crossed the border illegally in 2003, was echoed in a recent project, in which she walked 178 miles from the Mexico border to downtown LA, ritually embodying the journey of immigrants today.
