John Munger is Director of Research and Information for Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance (www.danceusa.org). He is widely acknowledged as a leading national expert on dance-related data and trends in America. He served on the Executive Committee of the Performing Arts Research Coalition, has conducted in-depth censuses of dance communities in Chicago, greater Washington DC, New York City, and the State of Minnesota, and is the author of “Dancing With Dollars In The Millennium,” a special publication by Dance Magazine analyzing financial trends among major dance companies during the 1990’s. He joined Dance/USA’s staff in 1996, after serving as a project consultant to the organization for five years, and is now the organization’s longest-standing employee. His prior experience includes extensive work as a consultant providing financial planning and management services for arts organizations both nationally and in Minnesota. He has also served as Business Manager of the Saint Paul United Arts Council, Associate Director and Financial Manager of the Minnesota Dance Alliance, and General Manager of the Nancy Hauser Dance Company. He has served as a panelist for numerous local, state and national arts agencies, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Council, the State Arts Councils of South Dakota and Ohio, the McKnight Choreographers’ Fellowship, the Sage Awards and MRAC. A 1967 Harvard graduate, he has been an active professional artist in dance since the early 1970s, when he studied and performed extensively with former Horton company member Norman Cornick and with legendary modern dance pioneer Hanya Holm. Currently he teaches modern dance technique at Zenon Dance Company and School, choreographs for his own Third Rabbit Dance Ensemble, does character roles for Continental Ballet in Bloomington, has been a visiting artist and guest lecturer for the dance departments at Carleton College and at Saint Cloud State University. He occasionally performs with other choreographers and organizations, most recently including Off-Leash Area, Kelly Radermacher, April Sellers Dance Collective and Three Dances. His wife, Sharon Varosh, teaches ballet at Macalester College and at Zenon. They are proud minions to four cats and caretakers of Sharon’s mother.
