Voids of Understanding: Opacity, Black Life, and Abstraction in What Remains

In her poetry, Claudia Rankine creates “internal, abstract landscapes of feeling,” says Will Rawls, who has collaborated with the Citizen author on a new performance work. “It is these landscapes of intensity, stillness, absurdity, and wonder that inform the mood and structure of What Remains.” In anticipation of the Walker’s performances of What Remains, writer and artist Malakai Greiner, in conversation with Rawls, reflects on legibility, blackness, Edouard Glissant’s right to opacity, and the void.

A Recipe for JACK &

“JACK & tells a story of dreaming deferred by the American criminal justice system, and of a search for the ingredients needed to get those dreams back.” Artist and writer Malakai Greiner offers their recipe for the Out There 2019 performance by Kaneza Schaal in collaboration with Cornell Alston and Christopher Myers.
