Mark Russell is director of the Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival, a festival tracking new theater from around the world. Russell produced the Under the Radar Theater Festival in collaboration with the Association of Performing Arts Presenters premiering at St. Ann’s Warehouse in January 2005. The festival moved to the Public Theater in 2006. In 2007, UTR expanded to a two-weekend format and it continues on as a core part of the Public Theater’s season today. Under the Radar is presently building its 16th edition for January 8–19, 2020.
From 1983 to 2004, Russell was executive artistic director of Performance Space 122 (PS 122, now PSNY). While at PS 122 he created many programs for artists and supported a vibrant performance scene.
