Celebrating an Artful Legacy: PNC and Jasper Johns

Curator Joan Rothfuss with Kate Kelly, Regional President of PNC Financial Service Group Inc.

Jasper Johns been a central figure in contemporary art since the 1950s, producing iconic images of targets, numerals, and flags in a variety of mediums. The Walker has a longstanding relationship with the artist and holds a complete—and still growing—archive of his prints in its collection. The depth and beauty of this important work is showcased in An Art of Changes: Jasper Johns Prints, 1960–2018, which also travels to the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Grand Rapids Art Museum, Michigan; and Tampa Art Museum, Florida.

The show’s curator, Joan Rothfuss, has chosen to incorporate several of the artist’s sculptures and paintings from the Walker’s collection, including Green Angel, pictured here. “The theme of the exhibition is Johns’s reuse, recycling, and revision of motifs,” says Rothfuss. “Seeing paintings and sculpture alongside the prints reinforces this idea by showing how Johns migrates those motifs across mediums. We’re thrilled to exhibit An Art of Changes, a presentation that would not be possible without the generous support of PNC Bank, an important partner of the museum.”

One of the premier banking institutions in the United States, PNC has maintained its reputation for more than 175 years. The company attributes this success to several factors, including deep relationships with community organizations. “Sponsoring the Walker and its cutting-edge programs, which provide experiences that actively engage audiences and inspire our community members, aligns with our support of the arts,” explains Kate Kelly, PNC regional president for Minnesota. “We see the bank’s sponsorship of An Art of Changes as a way to help bring the Walker’s vibrant visions to life, creating a more dynamic community for us all to work and live in.”
