Celebrating Robert Rauschenberg at 100
In 1965, Robert Rauschenberg’s first solo show, Robert Rauschenberg: Paintings 1953–1964, opened at the Walker. Sixty years later, the Walker joins an international celebration of the artist’s legacy in what would have been his 100th year.
Thanks to critical support from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, the Walker will offer Trisha Brown & Robert Rauschenberg: Glacial Decoy, focusing on the fertile collaboration between Rauschenberg and choreographer Trisha Brown that took place at the Walker in 1979. Showcasing set design, costumes, and prints, the exhibition will point to an expansive moment in the careers of two artists close to the Walker’s mission, allowing visitors to engage with this crucial work and its local history.
The exhibition will highlight Rauschenberg’s enduring influence on generations of artists, an idea that is at the heart of the centennial celebrations spearheaded by the foundation. “The centennial serves as not only a moment to reflect on Rauschenberg’s indelible legacy, but also as a catalyst for the century ahead,” said Courtney J. Martin, executive director of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. “Through these celebrations, our vision is to move his ethos forward and reinforce his relevance to artists, changemakers, and communities today and in the future.”
