A bustling crowd and beat-heavy music illuminated the Walker on Friday for the biannual After Hours party. The opening event for Cindy Sherman, this After Hours was hot. While Sherman attend the party for a short while, she was omnipresent all night in the packed galleries; from the more recent “Society Ladies” to the classic “Untitled Film Stills” to the clever “Historical Portraits,” the walls were filled with a variety of works from her long-spanning career.
Guests enjoyed live music from Lady Heat Hot Soul Party, wandered the galleries, sipped drinks and enjoyed appetizers by Modern Events by D’Amico. Some came dressed in costume for the evening and enjoyed capturing their style in The Traveling Photo Booth.
Many visited the Art Lab to receive a massage or have their hair and makeup transformed by Aveda Institute Minneapolis makeup artists and stylists.
The crowd was invited to don creative attire from CostumeRentals, a combined project of the Guthrie Theater and the Children’s Theatre Company, and pose in front of a green screen to create their very own “Cindy Sherman” photograph with Party People Pictures. These shots were projected onto the glass wall of the Cargill Lounge and posted to the Walker’s Flickr photo stream.
The high turnout and social sensation of the evening created a fantastic atmosphere to discuss the artwork and career of Sherman with friends or their alter egos.
Along with Walker coordinating curator Siri Engberg, exhibition curator Eva Respini (associate curator at The Museum of Modern Art in New York) was present to complete the minds behind bringing Cindy Sherman to the Walker Art Center.
While the party may be over, the exhibition runs through February 17, 2013 in the Target and Friedman Galleries.
