Insights 2018: PLAYLAB, INC. Formally Invites Joaquin Phoenix to Walk at the Walker

On March 6, we kick off the 2018 season of the Insights Design Lecture Series with Archie Lee Coates IV from the New York–based studio PLAYLAB, INC. While that in and of itself is exciting news, the night holds the potential for the possibility of something monumental—dare I say unforgettable.

PLAYLAB, INC. would like to officially invite acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix to walk across the stage of the Walker Cinema at 7:27 pm, Tuesday, March 6. This will be the second time the studio has attempted to stage the performance, aptly titled Walking Phoenix, following the failed first attempt at XXXI Gallery in 2015.

Previously, PLAYLAB, INC. created an exhibition at XXXI Gallery containing stills and “select sequences in which Joaquin Phoenix is walking in various motion pictures, including: Her, The Master, Walk the Line, Inherent Vice, Two Lovers, Gladiator, Signs, The Immigrant, The Village, and I’m Still Here. As an invitation to “perform” the actor was sent a pair of “Chuck Taylors with the XXXI Gallery address embroidered on the back of them, and a personal letter.”

To commemorate the upcoming lecture and potential performance, PLAYLAB, INC. has put together a limited edition zine that is only available the night of the lecture. In addition, the Walker Art Center would like to join PLAYLAB, INC. in extending an invitation to Joaquin Phoenix to walk at 7:27 pm in the Walker Cinema . So, there it is… it’s out there. THE BALL IS IN YOUR COURT, JOAQUIN!
