A public ceremony led by Dakota Traditional and Spiritual Elders will occur in conjunction with the beginning of the formal dismantling of the main wood portion of the sculpture Scaffold in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden on Friday, June 2 at 2 pm. It’s expected to take several days to accomplish this phase.
This ceremony, which will occur adjacent to the sculpture, is in accordance with a May 31, 2017 agreement reached between representatives of the Dakota community, the Walker, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, and artist Sam Durant. Members of the public may enter the Parade Parking Lot as early as 1:20 pm. Free parking will be available in the Vineland Place Parking Ramp connected to the Walker. In observance of this ceremony, the Walker galleries will close for the day at 2 pm.
This event is hosted by and for the Dakota Oyate, and the Elders invite all those who come with a good heart to witness. Please be respectful by allowing people the space to grieve and process the experience in their own way; guidance will be given at the event about when recording may not be appropriate. Thank you in advance for your courtesy.
