Phyllis Sher and Ken Swaiman are pediatric neurologists who grew up in environments that encouraged visiting museums. “Moving to downtown Minneapolis afforded us the opportunity to go to the Walker regularly, including weekly walks through the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden,” says Sher. “The notion that these spaces are so accessible and inspiring to residents and guests of all ages has made each of our visits especially enjoyable.” She adds, “When considering estate planning, we thought a long time about what mattered to us and decided it would be most satisfying to contribute to the Walker in a more immediate way, so that we and others could enjoy the experience sooner. This would also be an opportunity to honor our parents. The Walker staff was particularly helpful in working with us. We were able to gift Liz Larner’s sculpture X, to meet the artist, and to see the work being fabricated. Since its installation outside the main entrance, we have been gratified that many visitors—and especially children—are drawn to the work!”
“We have close friends that were among the earliest supporters of the Walker and they were helpful in our decision-making,” Swaiman shares. “In addition, the Walker’s diverse appeal, importance to Minneapolis, and international reputation contributed to our decision to donate. We are so happy with our choice and we would encourage others to do the same. We have been enriched by the experience, and the ongoing association with Walker has strengthened our commitment to continue to participate in the Legacy Circle!”
