Minneapolis artist’s Scott Nederlow and Ruben Nusz (also a frequent writer for mnartists.org) are launching an ambitious new project call Location– a bi-monthly publication of limited edition artists’ books. Location will focus on local, idea-based work, representing a wide variety of media. According to the website its “Essentially a gallery between two hard covers.” The goal of Location is to help artists to reach a broader audience by means of a portable medium and to provide a book-based experience of contemporary art. It’s are very interesting idea and I am excited to the piece in person….and if you are as well this Saturday is your opportunity to see/purchase the first Volume and get it signed by featured artist Isa Newby Gagarin. Its part of a packed weekend of Art-a-Whirl craziness this weekend. For some great picks on other Art-a-Whirl events check out mnartist.org editor Susannah Schouweiler’s rundown.
Volume One – Isa Newby Gagarin : Guam-born, Minneapolis-based emerging artist Isa Newby Gagarin explores the moon as a metaphor for photographic processes in the first edition of Location. The book is features a mix of appropriated images from vintage magazines and “moonprints,” (photographs which Gagarin produces by exposing photo-sensitive paper to moonlight). Gagarin has show recently at exhibition at Midway Contemporary Art, Art of This Gallery, Rochester Art Center, The Soap Factory and Synchronicity Gallery in Los Angeles. This is her first published book and could be a great (and inexpensive) art investment. It is an addition of 50. Prints by Gagarin are also available starting at $25 on the Location website.
