How did you become involved in the virtual member events?
I was scheduled to present member tours of An Art of Changes: Jasper Johns Prints, 1960–2018 in March, just before the Walker closed its doors due to the pandemic. That in-person event was canceled, but I was thrilled to host a virtual version one month later. Nearly 200 Walker members attended, and we’ve continued to hold digital member tours ever since. These are fantastic opportunities for people to gather, learn, and grow.
I believe online programs enhance the Walker’s ability to pursue its mission and build community, in ways that will remain important long into the future. Even virtually, the Walker strives to be a safe place for unsafe ideas.
Do you have a favorite Walker memory?
During a tour, my group arrived at the Yves Klein work featured in Mondo Cane, a 1960s Italian film. The movie’s theme song, “More,” was often sung to me by my dear father. Remembering those lyrics in the middle of my tour, I spontaneously filled the gallery with song via my most imperfect voice. Everyone, including me, was quite surprised! It was a new dimension to touring and remains one of my favorite Walker memories.
