What have you seen recently at the Walker?
The politically charged performance of Pursuit of Happiness from Nature Theater of Oklahoma and EN-KNAP Group showed me how dance and goofball comedy can challenge an audience to laugh at our uniquely American predicament; Trisha Baga’s 3D video installation [Mollusca & The Pelvic Floor] in The Body Electric was completely absorbing; and just recently, the new Barbara Kruger piece in the Main Lobby makes me smile whenever I visit.
What do you love most about the Walker?
The inclusivity that the institution is striving toward. It is apparent through the staff and the members I’ve encountered that people are open to understanding not just the art but also each other via their experience of that art. It’s refreshing to have such revealing conversations. I hope the Walker continues to inspire that kind of dialogue between artists, curators, and audiences here in the Twin Cities. Spaces to safely explore wide-ranging viewpoints are both rare and necessary.
How has membership changed your Walker experience?
Before joining I would focus on a few things I really enjoyed and rush past the rest. Now I have the ability to revisit individual pieces or whole exhibitions I didn’t connect with immediately, discuss the work with people at member events, and even visit the Walker’s library to explore new avenues of thought. It has really opened up my life.
